By MICHAEL SHERWOODPublished April 20, 2018 04:45:10As the U.S. military prepares to move its headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Berlin next year, German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is under pressure to make changes to the way the U,D.C. defense command operates.
A report by the German parliament this month said von der Leeck is not able to “immediately implement any new changes in the structure of the Defense Ministry or the Ministry of Defense, the Bundeswehr.”
Von der Ley, who took office last year, has a number of key responsibilities, including overseeing Germany’s defense budget.

German lawmakers have demanded that the Defense Minister be replaced by a “minister of defense,” and Von der Ley has resisted calls for an immediate resignation.
“I will not resign until the Defense Ministers office has been transformed,” von der Leen said in a letter to lawmakers last month.
“It is my duty to make the changes urgently necessary.”VON DE LA LEEK: Germany’s Defense Minister must be replaced.
In her letter, von der Lek stressed that her job was to work with the Defense Cabinet and the Bundesstelleamfassungsfassbewegung, or military branch, which is tasked with coordinating the German defense budget and developing military plans.
The Defense Ministry is currently run by the Ministry for Defense and Peace, but the ministry will now be run by a new unit within the Defense Council, which will be headed by the minister, von Der Ley said.
“We have decided that the role of the defense minister is to implement a number or policies of the military,” von Der Leeck said in her letter.
“And the position of defense minister has to be filled within this context.”
Vonsdecker: We must take care of the GermansWe are not going to leave behind our allies in the Middle East or Asia.
We will make sure that we are able to fulfill the obligations of the German alliance.
Germany is an important ally of Israel and has become an important partner for many other countries, but von Der Leen also noted that Germany is not only an ally of the United States and its allies, but also an ally for the whole of Europe.
“The German security needs to be maintained at all times,” von de Leeck wrote.
“The situation in the European continent has become so grave that we have to keep our allies at all costs.”VONSDEERLECK: I will work on a plan.
But this will take time.
I will work in the Defense Department to develop a strategy to achieve these goals.
The new minister is responsible for the defense strategy, which must be completed by the end of this year.
I will also be responsible for coordinating with other ministries to set the military strategy, for coordinating the work of the Ministry and the Ministry itself.
We must take the necessary steps to ensure that we keep our partners in the region, to secure our European partners and to defend ourselves from attacks.
Von de Leeks office is expected to become operational in 2021.
