Here are some tips to help you get your job lined up, including which social security benefits you’ll qualify for.
Do your homework!
The most common question I hear from prospective employers is, “What can I get on my Social Security card?”
It’s important to take a look at your options and determine if you can afford them.
You might qualify for some of the following benefits: Free tuition at public colleges and universities (this is available to low-income families, but not to students at private schools).
$100 in child care assistance each month for your child up to age 17 (you may need to find out more about how much assistance you qualify for).
Free health insurance for you and your dependents.
$200 in disability insurance each month.
Free food stamps for your family and up to two dependents, if eligible.
Free unemployment insurance (if you’re self-employed).
Free job search assistance (the National Labor Relations Board provides some information on how to find work in your area).
$1,000 in unemployment insurance each year.
This is a job search aid that covers up to $100,000 a year in lost wages and benefits.
Consider the pros and cons of various job opportunities.
I’ve found that having a degree from a public college or university can help you out in the workforce, but it can also mean you have to go into debt and pay off student loans.
If you have a job in a company that requires at least a bachelor’s degree, then the company may not have much in the way of benefits.
If that’s the case, it’s best to look for other options.
For example, you may have to look elsewhere if you’re looking for a part-time job, or you might have to take out student loans to make up for lost wages.
Some jobs pay a premium for the right position, and some companies may have higher-paying options if they offer it.
If there’s no benefit, or the company offers no benefits at all, it may be worth exploring other opportunities.
Get an appointment with your Social Security agent.
If your job doesn’t pay a living wage, it might be a good idea to find a job with a higher-paid position that will allow you to keep living expenses to a minimum.
Ask your employer if they’ll provide some kind of stipend or salary increase.
Ask about benefits and pay.
Do you qualify as a part time worker?
Do you receive Social Security disability payments?
What about paid time off, sick leave, or vacation time?
Does your employer offer these benefits or does it pay them?
You may need more information about your job in order to get a more accurate answer about whether you qualify.
Check the salary.
If the job pays well, you’ll probably have more flexibility in the amount you’re willing to pay.
However, if it’s not, it will be a lot more difficult to pay off your student loans if you have other sources of income.
If paying your student loan debt is too costly, ask your employer to lower your salary.
Pay attention to what you can earn.
Some job postings may require you to earn at least $75,000 per year.
You can pay off this debt with a 401k, 403b, or 457 plan, or if you are self-supporting, you can take out loans.
These are good options, but you’ll want to check your eligibility and pay it all back.
Look for other positions in your field.
Some positions in a specific industry may have more flexible hours, but they may not offer as much income as other positions.
You may have a lot of options in your industry, but if you find one that doesn’t offer as many benefits, consider taking a position elsewhere.
Find a local community college or vocational school.
You could get some financial aid, and it’s possible that you can qualify for state assistance for your tuition and other fees.
This may be one of the best ways to find some jobs that pay well.
Find an online job search tool.
This might be helpful if you want to find jobs that offer more flexibility than some jobs in your current field.
