When Pope Francis called on Catholics to repent for their sins, he made it clear that the Church was not immune to change.
But when it comes to what Catholics should do to live in harmony with the new pope, the Catholic faithful have had more than enough of being asked to repent.
Francis, a Jesuit, has been a popular leader among the faithful who have been waiting for him to arrive, and his call to repentance has been interpreted as a rebuke to those who refuse to do what he asks.
Francis is expected to announce his first papal encyclical on June 15, which will be an encyclic of sorts, which he will deliver to the faithful.
And he has already been criticized for his language and tone, including his comments about homosexuality and the role of women.
As one journalist put it, “it’s the pope who has the authority to speak.”
Francis’s call for Catholics to “come together” has led to criticism that he is taking his message too far, and he has also been criticized by some in the Church for his handling of the crisis of the Roman Curia, the body of bishops responsible for overseeing the Catholic church.
The Curia is the body responsible for managing the Church’s finances, and its leadership has been criticized over the past year for allowing its hierarchy to cover up sexual abuse allegations by clergy.
Many have called on Francis to step down.
What does the pope think of those calls?
Francis has said he will not take his encyclicals too far and that he will take them at their own pace.
He has also said that the Curia needs to be reformed and that it should be reformed as a body of pastors.
But the Vatican is still dealing with a massive scandal involving abuse, and Francis has made no secret of his view that the Holy See needs to reform its institutions and that the church needs to take responsibility for its failures.
Pope Francis: Why is the church so hard to reform?
There are many problems within the Curium, which is where the Holy Father resides.
There are also several layers of oversight and control within the Vatican, including the papal council and the Vatican bank.
What is the Curio?
The Curio is a code of conduct for the papacy that has been in place for decades.
Pope Leo XIII said it is a “great charter” that is “totally responsible to God” and that “it can be changed only by the pope.”
The code has been on the books since the Second Vatican Council, when the first pope, John Paul II, made it part of the papatelium.
Pope Paul VI, who was the first Pope to change the code in 1980, was the only one to replace it with a new code.
But in 2000, the Holy Office, the Vatican’s internal court of law, issued an “ex-communication” against the papates, who were found guilty of covering up sexual abuses by clergy, and the code was abolished.
The new code, which took effect in 2013, was a “briefly implemented, very temporary” code, but many of the new provisions remain in place.
The code also remains in place in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregations for the Propagation of the Christian Faith, and in the Vatican library.
Francis has also ordered the Vatican to pay out some $7.5 million to victims of clerical sexual abuse.
What are the reforms he’s asking for?
Francis is asking the Catholic community to come together to repent and be more “loving” to one another.
He says he will address some of the issues he’s raised in his encylicals, which are aimed at restoring harmony within the church.
Francis says he wants to give Catholics a way to “give grace, not to ask for it, to pray for it and to accept it.”
Francis says the church must take responsibility, that it needs to change, and that there are some who do not accept this change.
The pope has also asked that the Vatican stop using the word “homosexuality” and stop calling gay people “abnormal.”
Francis said in his speech at St. Peter’s that he does not want to call homosexuals “abnormals,” but he did say that there is a need to respect people’s “personal choice” about who they are attracted to.
What do the bishops say?
The bishops are mostly united in condemning Francis’s calls to repent, but there are divisions within their ranks.
The Vatican is also divided over the future of Francis’s curia, with some in Rome saying they want him to step aside while others are calling for him not to be forced out.
Some in the Catholic hierarchy have suggested that the new code needs to include more protection for clergy accused of sexual abuse and the curia should not be responsible for the Vatican Bank’s accounts.
Francis said he would have a more robust discussion about these issues when he meets with the bishops.
